Roof De-Icing & Gutter Heat Cables: A Complete Guide

Roof De-Icing & Gutter Heat Cables: How to Stop Ice Dams for Good

An ice dam is one of the most destructive and underrated home problems in cold climates. They form quietly, grow invisibly, and often go unnoticed until water has already soaked through your ceiling. If you’ve dealt with ice dams — or want to make sure you never do — here’s what you need to know.

What Is an Ice Dam and Why Is It Dangerous?

An ice dam forms when heat escaping through your roof (from your living space below) melts snow near the ridge. That meltwater flows down the roof slope until it reaches the cold overhang — the part of the roof above the exterior wall, which doesn’t benefit from interior heat. There, it refreezes into a thick ridge of ice.

As the dam grows, more meltwater backs up behind it with nowhere to go. Eventually it seeps under your shingles, soaks through your roof deck, and enters your home as a ceiling leak — often appearing feet away from the ice dam itself. Damage can include stained ceilings, saturated insulation, rotted structural members, and mold.

Ice dams are not a sign of a bad roof. They’re a sign of a heat differential between your living space and your overhangs — a problem almost impossible to fully eliminate through insulation alone in most homes.

How GutterMelt Prevents Ice Dams

Heatizon GutterMelt heat cables are self-regulating cables installed along roof edges, in gutters, and through downspouts. They maintain the eaves and gutter system above freezing, eliminating the temperature differential that causes refreezing.

Unlike older “heat tape” products that run at constant power regardless of temperature, GutterMelt is self-regulating — it automatically increases heat output in colder sections and reduces it in warmer sections. This keeps the cable operating in the 45–55°F range across its entire length, preventing both icing and overheating.

Key features of GutterMelt:

  • 9 watts per foot
  • Self-regulating technology, constantly seeking a stable temperature
  • ETL listed for US and Canada
  • Suitable for gutters, downspouts, metal roofs, and non-metal roofs
  • 5-year manufacturer warranty
  • Factory-connected 6ft plug, LED indicator, factory end seal — ready to use out of the box
  • Includes commercial-quality roof clips and downspout brackets

How to Size GutterMelt

Measure the linear footage of the areas you want to protect:

  • Gutter runs: Measure each section of gutter
  • Downspouts: Add the height of each downspout
  • Roof edge loops: If you want to run cable in a zigzag pattern up the roof edge to create melt channels, add approximately 1 foot of cable per 1 foot of roof edge (for a single loop)

Add these together to get your total linear footage, then select the cable length that matches. GutterMelt cablesets are available from 10 to 130 feet in one kit. For longer runs or complex rooflines, contact Heatizon for options.

Adding Automatic Control

Basic GutterMelt kits plug into a standard 120V outlet and can be run with a manual switch or timer. For hands-free automatic operation, pair GutterMelt with the M326-Series Controller/Activator — the same automatic moisture-and-temperature sensor used for SnowMeltz systems.

The M326A/M326ARS activates GutterMelt when it detects moisture and temperature below 37°F, then keeps it running for 90 minutes after precipitation stops to ensure complete drainage. You never have to think about it.

Installation Overview

GutterMelt installation is a DIY-friendly weekend project for most homeowners:

  1. Attach commercial-grade roof clips to roof area to be heated
  2. Route cable along the roof edge using the included commercial-grade roof clips
  3. Route cable through gutters and downspouts using the included downspout brackets
  4. Plug into a standard 120V outdoor GFCI outlet
  5. For automatic control, mount the M326A sensor where it will be exposed to falling precipitation

Full installation instructions are included with every kit. Technical support is available from our US-based team at 888.239.1232.
