Pipe Freeze Protection: Heat Cable Guide for Homeowners

Pipe Freeze Protection: How Heat Cable Keeps Your Pipes from Freezing

A burst pipe from freezing is one of the most expensive home emergencies you can face — water damage from a single burst pipe can easily exceed $10,000 in repairs. The good news: it’s one of the most preventable. Self-regulating electric heat cable keeps vulnerable pipes above freezing all winter, automatically, for pennies a day.

Which Pipes Are at Risk?

Not all pipes freeze equally. The most vulnerable are:

  • Outdoor hose bibs and spigots — The most commonly frozen pipe in residential homes
  • Pipes in unheated spaces — Garages, crawlspaces, uninsulated basements, utility sheds
  • Pipes running through exterior walls — Especially in older homes with thin insulation
  • Pipes in mobile homes and manufactured housing — Underbelly pipes are highly exposed
  • Long pipe runs in partially heated spaces — Cold spots in otherwise heated basements
  • Irrigation and sprinkler system lines — Backflow preventers are particularly vulnerable

If a pipe has frozen before, or if it’s exposed to outside temperatures for any part of its run, it needs protection.

How OutPipe Heat Cable Works

Heatizon OutPipe is a self-regulating heat cable — it wraps along the pipe and is secured with fiberglass tape (included in the kit). When plugged into a standard 120V outlet, it maintains the pipe above freezing automatically.

Self-regulating means the cable adjusts its heat output based on temperature. In colder sections of the pipe, it produces more heat. In warmer sections, it produces less. This prevents overheating, reduces energy use, and allows the cable to be safely overlapped without damage.

OutPipe specs:

  • 5 watts per foot
  • Self-regulating
  • 120V with factory-connected 6ft cord, LED plug, factory end seal
  • ETL listed for US and Canada
  • 5-year manufacturer warranty
  • Includes fiberglass tape for securing cable to pipe
  • Available 5 to 100 feet

How to Size OutPipe

Measure the linear length of pipe you need to protect. The cable runs alongside the pipe (not wrapped spirally), so 1 foot of cable protects approximately 1 foot of pipe. Instances like covering larger junctions or valves, may require additional heating cable.

Available lengths: 5 | 10 | 15 | 20 | 25 | 30 | 35 | 40 | 60 | 80 | 100 feet

For larger installations or commercial applications, contact Heatizon for more information.

If you have multiple separate pipe sections, measure each and order accordingly — or use bulk cable across the whole run. Contact us if you’re unsure: 888.239.1232.

Installation Overview

OutPipe installation is a simple DIY project:

  1. Clean the pipe surface and run the OutPipe cable along the length of the pipe
  2. Secure with fiberglass tape every 12–18 inches (tape is included in the kit)
  3. Plug into a standard 120V outdoor GFCI outlet
  4. The cable self-regulates and heats the pipe

For maximum efficiency, insulate over the cable with pipe insulation foam to help retain heat and reduce operating cost. Full instructions are included with every kit.
